Booth D08
It gives us great pleasure in showing Nilima Sheikh in a solo booth as Chemould Prescott Road participates in Frieze Masters for the first time in a special section titled, “Studio”, curated by Sheena Wagstaff.
For the past twenty years, the complicated political reality of the Kashmir region has been at the heart of Sheikh’s work. Into delicate-looking landscapes are interwoven a complex blend of oral narrative and religious painting with harsh contemporary stories of systemic racial and gender abuse. Excerpts of relevant poems are frequently stencilled directly onto the image surface. Sheikh’s work gives new meaning to the term pastoral by activating the poetic beauty of the landscape to communicate the political reality of the land.
