Reflecting on the mathematics of value/s, Sen’s satire draws attention to the universality of human values. It meanders through notes on economic depression as a metaphor, meaningfully drawing out the ever-present hierarchies of need and the trickery of consumerism.
Note
Mithu Sen’s salon of drawings form a shape-shifting ensemble; invoking at once a tapestry, a gridlock, and a mosaic. These self-referentially saturated drawings are informed by Sen’s deep forays into the artist’s identity.
Sen, building a composite image of her oeuvre, revisits her signature style (sourced through online generated data and the market’s demands). Reflecting on the mathematics of value/s: both economic and aesthetic, Sen is offering her art for sale in the Buy One Get One format, with multiple choices for the interested collectors.
The purchase of these independent fragments will open models of co-ownership that escape the diktats of value, ensuring that no one individual is the sole owner of these byproducts. Instead, all are co-owners and co-performers who come to polarise, deconstruct and then acquire a singular existence.
In bundling together her works in a BOGO scheme, Sen asserts the unreachability of art’s symbolic potential through the values ascribed by the market, drawing our attention to its disposability. The hypnotic visuality of repetitive colour and form, the invisible hand of the market, and the performative impulse –– all triangulate to create this orchestrated installation in motion.
