This painting presents a dystopic portrait of the nation. Scattered amongst its many hills and valleys lie remnants of modernist architecture, stark reminders of our failed attempt to engage with progressive ideas alongside vast arrays of dwellings which represent the uneven and discriminatory experience of modernity. These different buildings shroud social atrocities and blatant injustices, encompassing both the shrill cries of the oppressors as well as the despair of the dispossessed. Like medieval maps, the work attempts to chart our everyday reality in order to highlight our silences on the tragedies that are increasingly unfolding around us, particularly the rise of right-wing populism which has resulted in an exponential rise of violence against the marginalised.
