Anju Dodiya works with images that centre on the emotional theatre of her inner world. Private moments and intimate gestures trigger her subject matter.
This was painted from a film-still from a 1930s’ film of 'Supernatural', rendering the couple in an intimate moment. Anju's proclivity toward film, and film stills, she frequently turns to her archive of couples which she collects from varying sources.
What immediately draws our attention in this work is the lit face of the girl - her expression showing both control and vulnerability. But she also captures tension, tenderness, attraction and power-play between the lovers - a theme which she frequently visits.
